What are the Differences Between Powerball Starting Mechanisms?

Modified on Wed, 26 Mar at 4:30 PM

If you are interested in purchasing a Powerball, or maybe you already own one - then you'll have noticed that we offer different models with different starting mechanisms. We offer different starting mechanisms simply because we started the company in 1996 with the original "Cord-Start" mechanism, but our products have since evolved to include a number of new starting mechanisms, such as "Auto-Start" and "Electric-Start". But what are the differences between them?

The Different Types of Powerball Starting Mechanisms

Cord-Start

Some of our original 250Hz and 280Hz Powerball models feature the "Cord-Start" mechanism for activating the internal rotor of the Powerball. As the name suggests, these models each come with two starting strings (or cords), the tip of which can be inserted into the hole in the rotor, wound around the rotor and ripped out again to set the ball to life. You can watch a demonstration here.

While this is a very straightforward starting technique, it is still quite "old-school" and can be a little finicky to use at first. With Cord-Start models, you also have the option to start these rotors with your fingers instead of a cord - this technique cannot be performed on Auto-, or Electric-Start models.

Auto-Start

The internal rotor on Auto-Start Powerball models look very similar to those on a Cord-Start model. The main difference, however, is that the rotor of a Cord-Start will spin freely in both directions while the rotor of an Auto-Start ball will only spin freely in one direction. When you wind the rotor of an Auto-Start Powerball in the other direction, it meets resistance - very similar to that which you might find on a miniature toy car - like a Hot Wheels car.

When you wind the rotor back against this resistance 2-3 turns and then let it go, the Powerball will spring to life and you can start your workout.

Electric-Start

In 2024, we introduced a new evolution of Powerball - the "Electric-Start" Powerball. This model features the most simple starting mechanism yet: you simply press the "start" button on the top of the Powerball and it comes to life.
